Who should take the Basic Keelboat Certification course?

The course is designed for either brand new sailors or intermediate-level sailors who have no formal training or who need a brush-up.

What is taught in the sailing course?

In the classroom

  • Weather and Navigation

On the Water

  • Weather and Navigation
  • Boathandling (how to drive the boat)
  • Sail trim (when to pull in or release the sails and how much)
  • Tacking and Gybing (two ways of turning the boat)
  • Stopping and starting the boat (not as easy as pushing the throttle)
  • Man overboard recovery
  • Heaving-to

Course Schedule

All courses offered between May 1st and October 15th. Courses offered over an entire weekend or on select weeknights:

Weekend Schedule (every weekend):

  • Friday 630-9pm
  • Saturday 830am-630pm
  • Sunday 830am-4pm

Weekday Schedule:

  • Monday 6-830pm
  • Wednesday 6-830pm
  • Three consecutive weeks (6 evenings)

Course Fees

$400.00 – Course Fee (includes all U.S. Sailing course materials and certifications)

Materials and Certifications Include:

1. US Sailing Basic Keelboat Certification Course Book
2. US Sailing Official Logbook of Sailing
3. US Sailing Basic Keelboat Certification Standards Book
4. One-year US Sailing membership
