1. Who is the program open to?
  2. The Summer Leadership Program is currently only open to students enrolled at HRCS partner schools.

  3. What should kids bring to HRCS in order to be prepared for sailing?
    • Athletic attire
    • Sneakers – No boots, heels, flats, flip-flops
    • Lunch
    • Hat
    • Sunglasses
    • Water bottle
    • Sunscreen
    • Rain gear depending on the weather forecast
  4. Does my child need to know how to swim or have experience in sailing?
  5. No, there are no prerequisites for the course. Your child does not need to know how to swim nor does he/she need to have sailing experience

  6. Can I sign my child up for more than one week?
  7. No. With only four weeks available and in order to allow every interested camper a chance to experience the program, each camper is limited to one week of participation.

  8. I am interested in the scholarships for the program. Where do I get more information?
  9. The program application explains the scholarships but if you have more questions, please call our office at 212-924-1920.

  10. What happens if it is raining or the forecast is for bad weather? Is the day cancelled?
  11. No, the day is not cancelled. Though we cannot sail if there is lightning, we may sail in a light rain as long as it is safe and still fun. Campers should bring a rain jacket and change of clothes just in case. If we cannot sail, we have a long list of exciting “rainy-day” activities that we have compiled over the years that make the time just as fun as if it were bright and sunny. Check out our Rainy-Day Activities page for a sample.

  12. How many campers are there on each boat? Will my child receive personalized instruction?
  13. Each boat has an instructor and four campers. Campers spend much of the week in this small group and thus receive lots of personalized instruction and attention.

  14. If I am dropping off my child, where do I drop them off?
  15. If arriving by car, parents may temporarily park cars on West 26th Street just off the West Side Highway and walk their camper across the crosswalk to the boat house. It can also be arranged for staff to meet campers on West 26th Street and walk them over.

  16. If my child is traveling by public transportation, how do they get to the boathouse?
  17. The C, E subway line stops at 23rd St. and 8th Ave. and the 1 Subway line stops at 23rd St. and 7th Ave. From there, campers may transfer to the M23 bus to Chelsea Piers and get off at the Chelsea Piers stop to walk the 2 blocks up the boat house or simply walk 10-15 minutes from the subway. Please contact us at 212-924-1920 if special arrangements need to be made.

  18. What safety measures are in place on the boat?
  19. All campers must wear lifejackets at all times while on the dock and boat. In the unlikely event that a camper falls in the water, they will float and be picked up immediately by their boat. First aid kits are also available on board. HRCS staff are highly trained US Coast Guard captains and are certified in CPR and First Aid.

  20. What ages of kids participate in the Summer Leadership Program?
  21. HRCS teaches kids between the ages of 11 and 18 years old.

  22. Will my child be accompanied by an instructor on the boat?
  23. Participants are accompanied by an instructor at all times while on the dock and on the boat. At no point will kids be sailing a boat without a qualified instructor on board.

  24. I have a question but don’t see it here. Where do I find the answer?

Please call us at 212-924-1920 and we will be happy to answer any questions. In the event that there is no answer, please leave a message and we will return your call shortly.
