HRCS recruits approximately (90) new students each fall, mostly from 9th grade to enter Sail Academy. During the school year, students meet once per week, Monday, Tuesday or Thursday, from 4-6 pm in the winter and 4-7pm in sailing season. They also participate in trips and expeditions at the end of each semester. The first-year course is called Sailing by Numbers. Each lesson incorporates math, and has an on-water sailing component or hands-on boat-building activity. On a typical day, students might learn to measure current speed using an algebraic formula, and test their calculations on the water. They earn up to 2 elective credits in math, or PE. Students also participate in The New York State Safe Boating Course and receive a certification for Safe Boating and may earn certifications in First Aid and CPR from the Red Cross.
